Have to? Rather, We Get to.
If we pray every morning, sin will lose its power over us little by little, because the Spirit of Christ will be satisfying the longing in our hearts for God, which, when it is forsaken seeks idols of power and pleasure.
But the person who is in love with God fulfills the Moral Law naturally and freely. Morality is the consequence of having met Christ, not the conditions necessary for meeting Him. For the one who prays, the Christian life is a covenant, not a contract.
On the night before He redeemed the world by fulfilling the Law perfectly, even unto death on the cross, Christ gave a chalice to His disciples saying, “This is the blood of the New and Eternal Covenant for the forgiveness of sins.”
The Law and sin still exist, so we still go to Confession. But if we’re living with Christ every day in prayer from the heart, we won’t say we “have to” go to Confession. We’ll rejoice that we “get to.” +
